Discovering the Wild Heart of Sri Lanka: A Safari Vlog

Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes make it a dream destination for wildlife enthusiasts. On my recent group trip there, we experienced the vast plains of Wilpattu to a thrilling night safari in Sigiriya, the lush Sinharaja Forest Reserve, and the elephant-filled grasslands of Udawalawe. Thanks to the incredible knowledge and support of my guides, Ravisara and Sujee, I encountered a remarkable variety of species and unforgettable moments. You can watch the full video via the link below:

Exploring Wilpattu National Park

My adventure began in Wilpattu National Park, the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka. Known for its natural lakes and dense jungle, Wilpattu offers a quieter alternative to search for leopards than the famous Yala National Park (which can see hundreds of vehicles entering on a daily basis). Even if we hadn't been lucky with leopard sightings, the thrill of tracking these big cats and experiencing the bird life in this park, made Wilpattu an unforgettable start to the journey.

A Thrilling Night Safari in Sigiriya

From there, I headed to Sigiriya, where I embarked on a night safari. The forest takes on a new life after dark, and under the cover of night, we encountered a range of nocturnal animals, from fishing cats to nightjars and thousands of fireflies. It was magical to see the jungle come alive in a way most travellers never get to experience.

Into the Depths of Sinharaja Rainforest

The next stop was Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a haven for endemic species. It’s one of the last remaining primary rainforests in Sri Lanka and feels like stepping into another world: lush, humid, and teeming with life (including lots of leeches). With the expert help of my guides, Ravisara and Sujee, I was able to spot rare birds, monkeys, and reptiles.

Elephants of Udawalawe National Park

No wildlife journey through Sri Lanka is complete without visiting Udawalawe National Park. Known for its large herds of elephants (when the season to visit Minneriya elephant gathering is not possible), Udawalawe offered some of the most heartwarming moments of the trip. Watching these majestic creatures roam freely, interact with each other, and forest on vegetation was deeply moving and a perfect finale to the safari.

Guided by Passion: Ravisara & Sujee

Throughout the journey, I was guided by two incredible individuals, Ravisara and Sujee, whose knowledge, passion, and love for wildlife transformed the entire experience. Their sharp eyes and deep understanding of the environment allowed me to appreciate the landscape in ways I never could have on my own.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a travel experience that combines breathtaking scenery, rich biodiversity, and a genuine connection to nature, a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka is hard to beat. From the dry scrublands of Wilpattu to the rainforest depths of Sinharaja and the elephant-filled plains of Udawalawe, this island offers a spectacular journey into the wild.
